Cultivating Food Security

Sustainable Practices in Rural Communities
Tackling food insecurity and improving community well-being through sustainable farming practices, crop diversification, and sanitation improvements.

The agroforestry project continues to make significant strides in improving food security, promoting sustainable agriculture, and enhancing sanitation in the target areas.

Sanitation Improvements

Construction of 10 composite toilets is currently underway. This initiative serves multiple purposes. Firstly, it significantly improves sanitation conditions for the local community, contributing to better health and hygiene practices. Secondly, the toilets are designed to produce humanure, a valuable organic fertilizer. This dual-purpose approach enhances soil fertility for agricultural activities while addressing sanitation needs.

Sustainable Agriculture Practices

We have successfully implemented the production of organic maize using gliricidia leaves. This method enhances soil fertility naturally, reducing the need for chemical fertilisers and promoting sustainable farming practices.

To address food insecurity concerns, we are scaling up the cultivation of sweet potatoes on Chisi Island. This effort aims to provide a reliable and nutritious food source for the island's residents.

The establishment of food forests in the Zomba district has shown promising results in reducing food insecurity. These diverse, multi-layered gardens provide a variety of fruits, nuts, and other edible plants, ensuring a more stable and varied food supply for local communities.

The distribution of banana suckers to farmers on Chisi Island has been highly successful. These plants are now bearing fruit, directly supporting needy families in their fight against acute food insecurity on the island.

The project is enhancing community well-being by introducing rabbits, which serve the dual purpose of enhancing nutrition and providing organic fertilizer for crop production.

The multi-faceted approach, combining innovative farming techniques with practical solutions, is showing positive impacts on the lives of local communities in Malawi.
